NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns

The 2009-2010 season was a successful year for the Phoenix Suns. The team finished the season with a 54-28 record and made a deep playoff run, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers 4-2 in the Western Conference Finals. With that in mind, the Phoenix could only hope for another similar performance during the upcoming 2010-2011 season. After such success, the team probably has higher expectations and hopes to become a legitimate candidate for being the NBA champion.

The most notable change to the 2010-2011 Phoenix Suns squad is the loss of Amar’e Stoudemire. The powerful forward/center was credited for most of the success (along with Steve Nash) that the team enjoyed since his arrival in 2002. In the summer of 2010, Stoudemire signed a $100 million five year deal with the New York Knicks.

Heading into the 2010-2011 season, Steve Nash will once again carry a large burden as he will try to lead the Phoenix Suns to another successful year. Head coach Alvin Gentry always tries to revolve tactics and strategies around Nash’s game.

In all honesty, it seems that the Suns are lacking some true star power. The best addition to the roster is the crafty Turk, Hedo Turkoglu. There can’t be high expectations for the aging veteran Grant Hill, who is entering his 16th season in the NBA. When it comes to rookies Gani Lawal and Matt Janning, only time will tell how effective they will be in helping the Phoenix Suns.
